The Heavyweight Prospect Watch

Once a month, I will showcase a new Heavyweight Prospect. But these prospects are not house-hold names, but instead they are fighters that few people have heard of.

Nicolay Valouev

No, this is not a picture of the Muhammad Ali-Andre the Giant wrestling match, it's Nicolay Valouev fighting some guy named Leroy Harris.

This months' featured prospect is the Russian Heavyweight, Nicolay Valouev. Valouev, who is currently 9-0 (7 KO's), is definately one of the largest fighters ever. Standing at 7'2" and weighing about 320 pounds, Valouev is a giant. But unlike many other 300+ lb. giants, Valouev is not covered with layer upon layer of flab, but instead he is well sculpted. Although he may not be a good technical boxer and he doesn't have blistering handspeed, Valouev does have a lot of raw power and size. Not only is he big and powerful, but he also possesses an incredibly long reach. If he learns how to throw an effective jab, he'll be able to hit his opponents from the other side of the ring. While he may never be a contender, Nicolay may (and he easily could) follow the same path as two other large Heavyweights; Paea Wolfgramm and Butterbean. But although he may indeed have some potential, the lure of becoming a side-show attraction may just pull him in (especially since he's being promoted by Main Events).
