The Heavyweight Prospect Watch

Once a month, I will showcase a new Heavyweight Prospect. But these prospects are not house-hold names, but instead they are fighters that few people have heard of.

Ed Mahone

This months' featured prospect is Ed Mahone. Mahone, who is currently 14-0-1 (14 KO's), is getting some exposure on the Forum boxing shows. Mahone has won 14 straight, all by knockout, since drawing Joseph Farrell in his pro debut. He has steadily advanced as the competition has grown tougher. Early in his career, he was fed the common record-padding opponents, such as Anthony Moorer, Stan Jones and Jim Mullen. But since then, he has beaten tough clubfigher Bryant Smith and experienced journeyman Will Hinton. He followed up with a knockout over Val Smith, who had just kayoed French Olympian/Prospect Christophe Mendy in 30 seconds. He was scheduled to face former light-heavyweight contender Vincent Boulware a few monthes ago, but Boulware pulled out. Instead, Mahone made his main-event debut against clubfighter Bruce Bellocchi, whom he stopped early in the second round. Most recently, he stepped up against Everett "Bigfoot" Martin and stopped the tough veteran in the eighth round. Although Martin is a decade removed from his prime and it's been five years since his upset victory over Tim Witherspoon, he still has a very good chin and he is rarely stopped. Mahone has already been noticed by the WBC, who ranks him #29. Although he doesn't deserve that ranking yet, Mahone is a heavyweight to look out for. He is scheduled to fight in early December, but look for him to make his big move in '98.
