The Heavyweight Prospect Watch

Once a month, I will showcase a new Heavyweight Prospect. But these prospects are not house-hold names, but instead they are fighters that few people have heard of.

Monte Barrett

This months' featured prospect is Monte Barrett. Barrett, who is currently 14-0-0-1 (10 KO's), was an excellent amateur. Monte built up a 37-3 amateur record and won the Golden Gloves, three Empire State Championships, an Ohio State National Championship and a National PAL Championship. Although he is relatively unknown and untested, Barrett has two notable names on his record; Mitchell Rose and Val Smith. Rose is known for inflicting the only official loss (TKO 2) on Eric "Butterbean" Esch's record. Val Smith, is a dangerous v eteran who has recently defeated both Christophe Mendy (5-0) and Mike Suska (12-1). Barrett is now being promoted by America Presents and they plan to give Monte a big push in '98. Monte is now scheduled to face fellow prospect Anthony "T-Bone" Green in April. Green is on a roll, coming off back-to-back victories over Bert Cooper and Carl "The Truth" Williams.
